Hey, can someone help me form an equation for a rectangle that has a base 3 times more than the height.

The total perimeter of the rectangle is 79cm.

I can't remember the way of working it out. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'll show you with an example, instead.

The base of my rectangle is four times more than the height.

The perimeter of my rectangle is 90 cm.

Let x = the height

Then 4x = the base, yes ?

The perimeter is the distance all the way around the rectangle: base + height + base + height

So, the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is: P = 2(base + height)

Let's substitute in my values for the length of the base and height and for the perimeter.

90 = 2(x + 4x)

Now, I solve this equation for x.

90 = 2(5x)

90 = 10x

x = 9

The height is 9 cm and the base is 36 cm.

Does my example help you ?

No. Could you do original problem

I could, given sufficient motivation.

Did I confuse you by writing (x + 4x) for (base + height) ?

If so, so sad for you. :p
