Roots

How do you put a root in a sum on here?

My keyboard has no root symbol

If you are using a desktop PC (with Windows) then press [alt][251] (type in numbers using number pad and [num lock] key on)

If you are using a laptop PC (with Windows) then press [alt][fn][251]

and you will get √

Did you say that backwards? Are you asking how to show a sum inside a radical sign?

Subhotosh's steps do not work on my Windows desktop or laptop (nor at the library or college computers) because of a Windows bug.

When I want to type a square-root symbol, I paste it from the Character Map.

Otherwise, I simply type the expression using ASCII notation, like this:

c = sqrt(a^2 + b^2)

Cheers :)

PS: Be sure to include grouping symbols, if you type the √ symbol

√(a^2 + b^2)

Or you could use the "superscript" font in this board and show:

sqrt(a^2 + b^2) = (a^2 + b^2)^(1/2) = (a2 + b2)(1/2)
