There is an $85.00 recovery amount... For the month of March, $400.00 was charged at 25% - $85.00 = $15.00... However, rather than doing that; the following was done: $400.00 - 85 = $315.00 x .25 = $78.75 … How much was overpaid or how much is owed?

Before I help with this problem you first have to right the math correctly.

25% - $85.00 = $15.00 makes no sense at all! You can subtract dollars from a percent.

$400.00 - 85 = $315.00 x .25 = $78.75. That first equal sign is not valid, unless $315 = $78.15! Yes, $400-$85 equals $315 BUT you wrote $400.00 - 85 = $315.00 x .25! Note that the left hand side of the equal sign is $315 while the right hand side of the equal sign is $78.75

Please clean this up. And remember that ALL equal signs MUST be valid.

So $85.00 was to be recovered from a past overpayment...

The initial billing was $400.00 and 25% to be paid of that $400.00 minus the $85.00 that should be recovered to give a total of $15.00

$400.00 x .25 = $100.00 - $85.00 = $15.00

However, rather than doing that this was done:

$400.00 - 85 = $315.00 (took the "overpaid amount from the grand total billed initially)

$315.00 x .25 = $78.75

How much was overpaid?

I hope that makes a bit more sense.

$400.00 x .25 = $100.00 - $85.00 = $15.00
It is true that $400.00 x .25 = $100.00, BUT you did not write that. You wrote $400.00 x .25 = $100.00 - $85.00. That equation is NOT correct, do you see why? The lhs equals 100, while the rhs equals 15!

Right;

$400.00 x .25 = $100.00

$100.00 - $85.00 = $15.00

$15.00 is what should have been paid correctly.

BUT instead the payment was a such:

$400.00 - 85 = $315.00 (took the "overpaid amount from the grand total billed initially)

$315.00 x .25 = $78.75

How much was overpaid?
