Simplify the following expression without a calculator:
6+23+22+26−5−261
The answer is an integer.
6+23+22+26−5−261
The answer is an integer.
That is so nice how you broke up the 5. Everything flowed from there. Excellent work! Even Gauss would be impressed.5−261
=22+32−261
=(3−2)21
=3−21
=3+2
Because we are told that the answer is an integer, the expression under the square root sign in the first term of the original difference should be of the form (a+3+2)2 where a is an integer.
The value of the coefficients indicate that a will be positive and equal to 1.
Checking this:
(1+3+2)2
=(1+3+2)(1+3+2)
=1+3+2+3+3+6+2+6+2
=6+23+22+26
Isn't that nice!!
So LHS =(1+3+2)−(3+2)=1
You're welcome!
It is easy to see that 6+23+22+26=1+2+3+2⋅1⋅2+2⋅1⋅3+2⋅2⋅3=(1+2+3)2and 5−261=5+26=5+24We use the formula A+B=2A+C+2A−C, where C=A2−BThen 5+24=25+1+25−1=3+2Then (1+2+3)2−(2+3)=1+2+3−2−3=1
Ya'll are making it look too easy, so I needed some time to find hard ones.@BigBeachBanana
