#1 assumes you've learned some relevant formula. What formula have you learned?

#2 assumes you've seen problems just like this before, so you know what the picture would look like, and what variables your teacher is likely to define (since otherwise the variable is undefined and the equations are meaningless). There are other ways to solve such a problem, so you might want to use an entirely different equation.

Bottom line: Think back to what you've been taught, and use it. And if this is a test, what are you doing asking for help?
