Belford-on-sea has a population of 2015. The men and women are 1007 together and the women plus the children are 1537 together.
How many women
How many men
How many children

You could write three equations in three variables, and solve.

Or, you can just think: How many children are there (using the first two numbers)? Then, how many women (bringing in the last number). Finally, how many men (using the first or second)?

Assign symbols to the variables (Unknowns or finds):

# of many women = W
# of many men = M
# of many children = C
has a population of 2015 → .....................................................W + M + C = 2015 ..........................................(1)
The men and women are 1007 together.......................................M + W = 1007 ..........................................(2)
the women plus the children are 1537 together ......................W + C = 1537 ............................................(3)
There are three (3) equations above and three unknowns (M & W & C) to evaluate. There are many methods available - use the most favorite one.
