Hi, I am a cross stitcher, trying to work out the total number of stitches on my piece. What puzzles me is that in a grid of 10 x 10, each has two stitches. Now, I know that the total number of stitches on that grid is 200, ((10x10)x2). But why wouldn’t it be 400 (20x20)? This really has me confused. I would really appreciate clarification. Cheers Dale.

Can you explain why you think it might be 20*20?

There are 100 squares, each with 2 stitches, so clearly you are right about 200. There are not 20 rows of 20 stitches.

You can get the number of squares first: 10*10=100
Then multiply by the number of stitches per square: 100*2=200

Or you can calculate the number of stitches per row: 10*2=20
Then multiply by the number of rows: 20*10=200.

But where 20*20 comes from is a mystery to me.
