I feel like an idiot for not knowing what to do... been 20yrs since I was in math/algebra class. I tried....

jenny is 60 inches tall. that is 10 inches taller than marie. The difference btwn joes heights and Jennys height is 2 inches more than btwn Joes height and Maries height. how tall are Marie and Joe?

--- so we know marie is 50 inches. she (my kid) is not doing this via algebra in class... so how else do I solve it.

And I tried to solve it algebra way and couldnt if you want to share that too. Thanks!

Jenny: 60
Marie: 50
Joe: [unknown]

If Joe were taller than Jenny, then his difference with Jenny would be less than his difference with Marie. So Joe must be shorter than Jenny.

If Joe were shorter than Marie, then his difference with Jenny would be ten more than his difference with Marie. So Joe must be taller than Marie.

Then Joe is between Jenny and Marie in height.

Can you think of a number, between fifty and sixty, that is two closer to fifty than to sixty?

Eliz.
