a girl painted a rectangular-shaped portrait which is .......

in post 14 i got the answer by adding the new perimeter=29 in
but subbin' 2 an5 from it =24^2
i wrote 24^2 down below ( in post 14) and asked if that was the right answer.
You'd posted the correct answer (somehow), but your approach (using perimeter) and your arithmetic (29-5-2=24) are incorrect.

?

Can you post the complete solution? (if you still need someone to review it)

otis explained it very clearly. i was grasping at straws when i tried to find the perimeter and take away what was trimmed. it was so easy now in plain sight. i should not have thought twice, but word problems are hard for me. i keep working at it, though
she trimmed 2.5 of both wide sides so both sides ( 8 -5) [2.5 trimmed on each side]
and 2 inches off of only one side of the length. 10-2

(10 - 2) × (8 - 5) = 24 in^2 .................................corrected
