Arthur has given you a correct response for his interpretation of the problem...however, complex solutions don't seem "right" in this (admittedly fuzzy) context.
here is complete statement.
"there is a cook man.he wants to cook rice.he have to use the salt and spice.the correct proportion is given in braces (formula = quantity of salt should be three times of quantity of spice.)
he put 3 pounds of salt according to the given formula.what is the quantity of spice and salt he used?"
i think its not as simple as looking.rapid glance shows that he uses 1 pound of spice and 3 pounds of salt.But see
three times of 2 = 2*2*2 =8
three times of 3= 3*3*3= 27
in this way three times of 1 should be 1. (1*1*1=1)
