about the population proportion

What does "median" mean? What does "population proportion" mean?

I imagine the sample size may be needed for a later part of the problem.

Not as far as I can see. I'd like to see the rest of the problem.

What are your answers to my questions?

Median is the middle value of the data, and the population proportion may the mean value in the population

Not quite.

Yes, the median is the middle value, which specifically means that 50% of the population is less than that, and 50% is greater.

But the population proportion is not a mean. What is the definition you were given?

As for the rest of the question, do you notice that part (b) mentions the sample? That's where the sample size will come in. Part (a) is entirely about the population.

Maybe something we interested in the population, and the percentage of it in the population is the population proportion.
So since the median is 35000, so the population proportion of less than 35000 per month may be the 50%, right?

Ok, so "the population proportion of economically active households that earn less than $35,000 per month" means "what percent of the economically active households earn less than $35,000 per month?" And the median tells us that this is 50%. So what is the answer to (a)?
