Solving absolute-value inequalities (or equations) works by converting the inequalities (or equations) into their corresponding "regular" inequalities (or equations). For instance:

. . . . .| x - 3 | > 5

. . . . .x - 3 > 5 --or-- x - 3 < -5

. . . . .x > 8 --or-- x < -2


. . . . .|x + 4 | < 2

. . . . .-2 < x + 4 < 2

. . . . .-6 < x < -2
