Adding Scientific Notation with exponents

I'm really not sure how to start on this. I (think) I know how to add them without the exponents on the outside, but I'm not entirely sure.

Can you square 1.23X10⁸? How about squaring (1.45X10^-3)?

$(123\times 10^{-2}\times 10^8)^2+(145\times 10^{-2}\times 10^{3})^2$
