Hi, this type of age problems are always interesting form me. it is good exercise for the brain, let me try something here and see if it sticks.
Anna is 4 times older than Paul. After 5 years Anna is 3 times older than Paul. How old is Anna?
Data given
Anna is 4 times older than Paul
5 yrs had to go by so Anna is 3 times older than Paul
how old is Anna?
Anna=a
Paul=p
a= 4(p) Anna is four times older than Paul
after five years....
Anna is three times older than Paul
a+5 = 3*(p+5) five years would have passed for both of them, and Anna would be three times as older.
now , I have an equation where I would solve for p
a+5 = 3*(p+5)
4p +5 = 3p+15 ( because Anna=4p)
I'll subtract 3p from both sides
4p-3p+5 = 3p-3p+15
p+5 =15
I'll sub 5 from both sides
p=10
now that I have Paul's age I can find Anna's age after 5 years. the problem says she is four times older
a=4(p)
a=4(10)
a=40
Anna is 40 years.
