If you have a mixed number and the whole-number part is negative, is the fraction negative? Looking at this exercise:
. . .-2 <sup>3</sup>/<sub>4</sub> + -5 <sup>1</sup>/<sub>5</sub>
. . .-2 <sup>15</sup>/<sub>20</sub> + (-5 <sup>4</sup>/<sub>20</sub>)
. . .-7 <sup>19</sup>/<sub>20</sub> = ...
Here's where the question (above) comes in. Is it:
. . .-7 + 1 <sup>1</sup>/<sub>20</sub>, which equals 6 <sup>1</sup>/<sub>20</sub>
Or is it:
. . .-8 <sup>1</sup>/<sub>20</sub>
