(2 + 4)2 x 5 - 2

2 + 4= 6
6 x 6= 36

I don't know whether to multiply the 36 by 5 then subtract 2: answer 178

Or, multiply the 36 by 3: answer 108

I think that the first would apply since there is no parentheses, but I am confused and appreciate your help, thank you.

Your first approach is correct. Just follow PEMDAS for order of operations -- parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. Therefore, multiplying 36 times 5 comes before the subtraction.

Also, show exponents by using the "^", as in (2 + 4)^2.
