First, you have to determine what "an exponential function" means! Most likely your textbook takes it to mean something like a*b^x, but they might also write it as, say, a*e^(kx), or several other possibilities.
Whatever way you write it, there will be two parameters (a and b, a and k, ...) to find. Plug in x=2 and x=-1 to obtain two equations, then solve for the two parameters.
