(x^2+x+1/4)-1/4-1=0
You added and subtracted 1/4 on one side, not both sides of the equal sign. It is dangerous to say what you said as in other problems you may thing the other side means on the other side of the equal sign. In those cases adding 1/4 to side and subtracting 1/4 from the other side would not be correct.
