calculus and the definite article

We often hear that a particular math problem was solved using algebra, plane geometry, or the like. With regard to "the calculus", however, the definite article (i.e., the word "the") frequently precedes the noun "calculus". Why is that?

We often see the statement "Study the law". Because the law is a collection of many legal areas of study.
