9 is NOT 3 times greater than 6: 9 is greater than 6 by 3: 9 - 6 = 3

Can you not follow TK's steps?

2 numbers are x and y: "one is 3 times as large as the other"
Make y the larger: then y = 3x ; OK?

These 2 numbers ADD UP to 48 : "two numbers whose sum is 48"
Then x + y = 48
and since we have y = 3x, then:
x + 3x = 48
Can you finish this thing now?
