Can this be solved? 0.1472x = y and y + x = 2985.04

Hi, having a bit of a dilemma here. I have two equations:

(x * .1472) = y

and

y + x = 2985.04

Knowing just that, is it possible to get x or y?

I have the answer to x and y for these particular equations, but in all other cases we would not know what x and y are. We just made up some numbers for the sake of trying to see if we could arrive at our x and y values.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, solve one equation for a variable and sub into the other.

For instance, you have:

\(\displaystyle \L\\14.72x=y\)...[1]
\(\displaystyle \L\\y+x=2985.04\)...[2]

Solve [2] for y, sub into [1] and solve for x. Or sub [1] into [2] and solve for x.

P.S. x = 2602.02 and y = 383.02

Can we arrive there though with just the two given equations?

Or, I guess you could also do:

2985.04 - x = y

Is that one able to be solved?

Awesome thanks a lot!

You have two variables, so you need two equations. You have that. Solve for x and y. There is a solution.
