What are the classical mathematics textbooks for advanced and undergraduate level that a mathematician should possess?
 
Hoffman Kunze Linear Algebra
Royden Real Analysis
Rudin Real Analysis
Ross Probability Book (Maybe shouldn't be on the list)
There is a start
 
How can I forget Herstein's Topic in Algebra. That is the bible for beginning Algebra.
 
Norbert Wiener claimed that his career was deleteriously affected by the anti-Semitism of Birkoff. I read this in some book but I can't remember which book (maybe on this forum knows). I don't if it is the same Birkhoff who was the author of Modern Algebra. I did have this book at one time.

Garrett Birkhoff also see here as you see from the list in that link, Birkhoff was quite active. I know nothing of is social actives.
