Here's a small cryptic crossword puzzle with a twist -- no labels! Answers are common words, compound words, hyphenated words or phrases. All hyphens and spaces have been removed from the grid; each clue displays a total character count. Eight letters have been provided, to help prevent crypsters from spending all their coffee breaks here this week. ;) Hints will also be added to the thread, as the week progresses (even if someone posts a solution).

Are there supposed to be columns? Don't see any except for the first one. Formatting problem?

Apparently. Dang. It looks okay at my end, so I'm not sure what's up.

The first hint comes sooner than I'd planned. I've deleted the word 'French' from the phrase "funny French money" in the first clue. It's not necessary, and it could be misleading.

[My answers for the first seven clues …]
Looks good, so far, Romsek. (You're a Trooper!) :) I'll wait to see whether fitting those answers to the grid helps you to finish the last clue.

Understandable! (The two synonyms in that wordplay are a bit of a challenge to interpret.)
