If I say 1 out of 1000 people will die of a virus, is it the same as saying 999 out of 1000 will survive?

Does surviving include:

  • being bed-ridden for rest of life
  • being hooked to ventilator for rest of life
  • etc..
On the other hand "die"-ing very definitive - heart stopped, case closed. What do you think...

Well it comes down to this. If you do not die, did you survive?

The 999 that don't die of a virus could die by some other means.

For that matter everyone dies eventually. How do you define survive?
