My questions says on a trip your are k miles from your destination at 4 pm and y miles from your destination 2 hours later.
How far have you traveled in the two hours?
What was your average speed for the two hours?
would it be 10ky and not sure about the speed?

Did you draw a picture ?

A picture makes it completely obvious that you traveled k-y miles in 2 hours.

:?: Do you know the famous formula that relates the following three numbers?

Distance traveled

Rate of travel

Time elapsed

D = R * T

R = D/T

T = D/R

You have expressions for two of these numbers; you're asked to find an expression for the remaining one.

Please show your work, if you would like more help with this exercise.

MY EDIT: I like Glenn's terminology better, and I added D=RT

\(\displaystyle 1) \ Distance \ traveled \ in \ two \ hours \ = \ k-y \ miles.\)

\(\displaystyle 2) \ Average \ speed \ in \ those \ 2 \ hours \ = \ \frac{distance \ traveled}{time \ elapsed} \ = \ \frac{k-y}{2}.\)

Good enough. See mine below.

no I don't know the formula

Then just use Glenn's model.

Average speed in miles per hour is: miles/hours
