The ratio of apples Andrew, Ben, and Declan had was 3 : 8 : 4. When Ben gave 21 apples to Andrew and Declan, all of them have the same number of apples in the end. How many apples did Ben have at first?

21 x 8 = 168

168 apples

Did Ben give 21 apples EACH to Andrew and Declan

Or

Did Ben give 21 apples TOTAL?

Has to be the latter.
For the sake of it; I know it's just academic now:
A, B, D
21, 56, 28
Ben gives 14 to A and 7 to D - they then have 35 each!

Correct .... because they started with different amounts and ended up with the same amount...

The way I did it:

They started with (8+3+4 =) 15 * A apples - Ben had 8*A apples. So:

8A - 21 =(15/3 ) *A

3A = 21

A = 7 .... Ben started with 56 apples.
