I have added all the values and divide the sum by the number of data:
[math]8 + 3 + 7 + 16+ 8 + 13 + 12 + 1= 68[/math][math]mean =68/8[/math][math]=8.5[/math]the heaviest pumpkin weighs 16
[math]16-8.5[/math]the heaviest pumpkin is 7.5 heavier than the mean.

Is this correct?

It may very well be. Outliers may be at both ends of the data set. Far removed from the average.
