In earlier grades you might have been given the two problems 7+5 and 8+3 to do.
Now they give this as one problem. To show that you are to add just the 7 and 5 they put an x next to them and to show to just add the 8 and 3 they put a y next to them as in 7x + 8y + 5x + 3y (note that the ordering of the four terms do not matter). Now in the answer you code it the same way. Since you added the 7 and 5 because they have an x next to them you put an x next to the sum. That is the simplification of 7x + 8y + 5x + 3y is 12x + 11y.
