If I were to do this assignment, I would first locate the end-points of the segment and find their co-ordinates. In the absence of any other instructions, I would assume the segment to be a straight line.

How about

you HAVE to start somewhere - otherwise we don't know what you know and what will make sense to you !!!

What are the endpoints of the segment? Once you know that, you can use the distance formula to find the length between the two points.

Think of the 'blue' line segment as the hypotonus of a right triangle the lengths of its legs are five and one. Those are gotten by simply counting the 'block' units. How long is the hypotonus?
