The density of gold is 19.3 g/. A 3.4 mg piece of gold is hammered into a square that is 8.6 x cm thick. What is the length of a side of the square, in cm?

Density = Mass/Volume
You know the mass and the density. Rearrange the eqn to solve for volume:

V = M/D

Now you know the volume, too. You also know that the volume of a rectangular object is length times width times height:

V = l*w*h

You know the height (8.6 cm), and since it’s square, l = w, so solve for l:

l^2 = V/h or
l = sqrt(V/h)
