Finding X: finx if lxl= 2.4

I' am sorry but I never did any of this stuff in school so explaining it to me would be of great help. here is one of my problems.

finx if lxl= 2.4 how would i find this out please, please explain to a dummy.

x will be -2.4 or 2.4. Because it's an absolute value.
