I have tried taking the derivatives of the function with x and y respectively, but I can't seem to figure out the best way to approach this problem. I'm open to suggestions as to how to proceed.

Well, they say to do it "directly", so just do what the formula says. (And don't take derivatives that it doesn't tell you to take. I suspect another part of the problem may involve derivatives.)

What is M? What is N? Make both of those functions of the parameter t. Then, what are dx and dy (in terms of the parameter t)? Then integrate.

We'll want to see your work, not just a description of it, in order to know where you need help.
