Hello math whiz patrons. I am hoping someone can please help with this year 7 (uk) math question. So, my son has been given some homework, most of which is fairly simple for him, bar a few tougher questions. This one has confused us both, I do not wish to provide him with the answer, but, to provide assistance in being able to do so!

He has tried a few methods, which so far haven't quite resulted in an answer that makes sense.

Many and all thanks in advance, may the power of all the professors forever be with you.

Please show a couple of your/his attempts, so we can see what is causing the confusion.

Let P represent the number of pages in the book. After Monday, there is (2/3)P left to read. After Tuesday, there is (2/3)P times (7/10) left to read, which represents the 35 pages. Take it from there.

"On Monday he reads 1/3 of the book."
So he has 2/3 of the book left.

"On Tuesday he reads 3/10 of the remaining pages."
So he reads (3/10)(2/3)= 2/10= 1/5 of the book.

He has read 2/3+ 1/5= 10/15+ 3/15= 13/15 of the book and has 2/15 left.

2/15 of the book is 35 pages so the entire book is 35(15/2).

But that is not a whole number so something is wrong!

Check your work; I got a whole number. Did he really read 2/3+ 1/5?
