If you're going to indicate rational exponents, then type it that way. Use grouping symbols: (x - 2)^(3/2) = -8 or \(\displaystyle (x - 2)^{3/2} = -8 \ \ or\) \(\displaystyle (x - 2)^{\frac{3}{2}} = -8\) --------------------------------------------- What you have is equivalent to: \(\displaystyle \dfrac{(x - 2)^3}{2} = -8\)
