51. Express each equation in the specified form
a. y= -2x^2 + 28x-26 in factored form
b. y= -9x^2 + 72x +81 in vertex form

For the first one, take the common factor of -2 out front, and then factor what remains. Hint: What factors of 13 add up to 14?

For the second one, complete the square. The general process is:

1) move the loose number ("81" in this case) over with the "y"
2) factor out whatever is multiplied on the squared term ("-9" in this case)
3) take half of the coefficient remaining on the linear term ("-8" in this case), square it, and add to both sides; remember to multiply on the y-side by whatever you factored out in (2)
4) convert the non-y side to perfect-square form; move the loose number back over from the y-side
5) read the vertex off the equation

If you get stuck, please reply showing how far you have gotten. Thank you.

Eliz.
