ok i dont get how to do these! lol

A vending machine takes only neckels and dimes. There are 5 times as many dimes as nickels in the machine. The face value of the coins is $4.40. How many of each coin are in the machine.

A jar of quarters and nickels contains $1.25. There are 13 coins in all. How many of each are there?

Help is GREATLY appreciated! thanks

Pick a variable for the number of nickels; say, "n". Write an expression, in terms of this variable, for the number of dimes.

If you have one nickel, how many cents do you have? How about for two nickels? Three? Four? Ten? "n"?

Use this to form an expression for the value of the nickels.

If you have one dime, how many cents do you have? How about for two dimes? Three? Four? Ten? How many cents are represented by your expression for the number of dimes?

Use this to form an expression for the value of the dimes.

Add the "value" expressions; set equal to the total value (expressed in "cents"). Solve.

The other exercise works similarly.

Eliz.
