The average cost is the total cost C(x), divided by the number of items, x. Write an equation that says this is 120, and solve.

Actually, the problem tells you what the equation for the average cost, not total cost, is. This problem is just a matter of solving the given equation, \(\displaystyle \frac{7377+ 40x}{x}= 120\) for x. I would start by multiplying both sides by x to get \(\displaystyle 7377+ 40x= 120x\) and solve that.
