if ax^2 + bx + c = 0, then x = [-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)]/(2a).

If the instructions are "Solving the following using the Quadratic Formula."

But what if he's supposed to "Use the discriminant to judge the number of x-intercepts"? Or determine if there are any complex roots "without solving"? Or specify whether or not this is a quadratic equation?

The instructions can be a crucial part of "the question"....
