Squaring is indicated by a raised number, so "the square of 24" would be written as "24[sup:mi7ihrrl]2[/sup:mi7ihrrl]". No "brackets" are involved, so whatever symbols you're looking at probably mean something other than squaring. Also, no instructions are included in your post so, whatever the expression might be, we have no idea what you're supposed to do with it. Sorry!
