I would like some help to create a spreadsheet that would calculate an equal share of the inheritance our two children will eventually inherit.

We have two children 'A' & 'B'

We helped 'B' to buy her property which took '£x' amount out of our investment portfolio

At that time we had a total of £y in our investments
We were then left with '£y-x' in our investments.

It is very likely that before our two children inherit that we will help financially one or both of them again.

I want to create a spreadsheet that will calculate the equal share (percentage or amounts once data is entered) that our two children will eventually inherit taking into account the following data:-

Value of our portfolio before and after any transfers.
Dates and amounts of any transfers to either of our two children.
The growth of our remaining investments between withdrawals so we can calculate the % growth of our investments would have achieved without any withdrawals.
Any amounts that we draw for ourselves.

I would need the spreadsheet to take into account that the fact that we will likely withdraw unequal amounts to give to one or both of our two children on varying dates, and also take withdrawals for ourselves. With the value of our investments fluctuating (hopefully upwards) over the forthcoming years, I feel that it makes it difficult to ensure that each of our two children eventually receive an equal share of their inheritance.

Any help with creating such a spread-sheet would be much appreciated.

Have you tried to set-up a spreadsheet with the above constraints?

If yes, then share the spreadsheet with us and we can assist you to improve it as needed.

If I were to start such a spreadsheet, I would assign column headings for different portfolios - e.g. investments, earnings from investment. cash, interest, etc.

Once you start it - with some thoughts behind it - we can work on improving it (as/if needed).

Thanks for your reply which I much appreciate.

I have set up a spreadsheet of sorts but it certainly needs more work and even then I am unsure whether or not that will accurately reflect what I am trying to achieve.
I have only just come out of hospital and am still recovering but will edit what I have done so far to make it more intuitive and send it to you when I am more on the mend.

Hi @J3trooper,

Just for info: you won't be able to attach a spreadsheet file (eg: "
spreadsheet.xlsx") to any post you make in here (because only a few kinds of file types can be attached in the forum), however, once you have finalised your spreadsheet, if you change its extension to ".txt" then you will be able to attach it to a post (eg: change "spreadsheet.xlsx" to "spreadsheet.txt").

You should also explain in your post what you have done and advise anyone downloading the file that they must first change the file extension (from "
.txt" back to ".xlsx") before attempting to open it.

Hope that helps. 😊
