How do I determine the minimum number of Variables needed to solve a system of equations

Suppose I have a system of [imath]m[/imath] equations, and in this system there are [imath]n[/imath] variables/unknown variables.

Is there a general method that I can apply to determine the Minimum number of Variables I need to know the numerical values of in order to solve the full system?

In general, to solve n variables, you need n distinct equations.
