How do I sketch this in the complex plane?

Looks like a sound approach, but you got the absolute values wrong. Question 1 : what is the absolute value of [imath]a+bi[/imath]? Question 2: what are the values of [imath]a[/imath] and [imath]b[/imath] in the left and the right hand sides of your inequality?
 
I went with the same approach but better calculation, how do I reach the end here?

Are you saying the last line is not your own, and you don't know how to get it?

First multiply the inequality by -1, then complete the square in x and y.

But there are a couple numbers wrong in the next to last line. Did you divide by 6 or by 24 to get it?
