the class is intermediate Algebra. Chapter 4.2

horse invested $70 000 in two stocks After 1 year one of the stocks increased by 13% while the other stock defined by 5% His total gain for the year was $2800. How much was invested in the stock that earned 13%? How much was invested in the stock that lost 5%

i would appreciate the help

Please show your work and indicate exactly where you are stuck - so that we can help better.

To start with:

Assume

Horse invested $ L in the losing (5%) stock

Then

Horse invested $ (70000-L) in the winning (13%) stock.

So

0.13*(70000-L) - 0.05*L = 2800

Now solve for 'L' from above.
