i need help simplifying expressions, like 3 + 2x + -4x

Ok. We can't teach here, so please give us a specific example of something you're having trouble with. Remember to show what you've tried, so we can see where you're stuck. Thanks!

3 + 2x + -4x

this is what i think is the answer but i'm probably wrong:

3 + 2x + -4x
5x + -4x
1x

Jars, if you "see" that 5x + -4x = x, why can't you "see" that 2x + -4x = -2x ????

Answer is 3 - 2x

REMEMBER: 3 + 2x is NOT EQUAL to 5x
and
REMEMBER: pay attention in class

ok

thanks. i asked my teacher and now I know everything about like terms and combining them and using the properties.
