A petroleum company receives two shipments of crude oil. Combining 64 pints from the first shipment with 96 pints from the second shipment produces 160 pints of oil at 65% purity. Combining 144 pints from the first shipment with 36 pints from the second shipment produces 180 pints of oil at 55% purity.

What is the percentage of pure petroleum in each of the two shipments?

Let x = purity of first shipment
Let y = purity of second shipment

64x+96y=0.65(160)
144x+36y=0.55(180)

Solve the system of equations. Remember that if you get an answer like 0.45, that does not mean 0.45%.

0.45=45/100=45%

Thank you dagrBest, I will come back with my solution after I sove it, could you check to see if I am correct or incorrect on this word problem. Thanks

ok here is my solution

64*x+96*y=0.65
144*x+36*y=0.55

y/1=73/(2^6*3^2*5^2)
x=49/19200

y=73/(64*9*25)
x=49/19200

y=73/14400
x=49/19200

y=73% second shipment
x=49% first shipment

Please check my work Thank you

I got x=0.5 or 50% and y=0.75 or 75% which checks out when you plug them back into the system of equations. I hate trying to decipher e-math text so I can't tell where you went wrong.

Your system of equations should be:

64x+96y=0.65(160)
144x+36y=0.55(180)

and not just:

64*x+96*y=0.65
144*x+36*y=0.55

Was that just a typing error?

I see I think that is where I went wrong Ok I will go back and recheck myself on this I was thinking 160 and 180 was just giving me a guide. of the percentage and I did leave that out. I will go back and recheck myself. Thanks again.

You was right I should of not excluded the 160 and 180. When I went back to do my problem I came up with x=50% and y=75%. I can see how a answer can be wrong with when not adding all the formula to the problem. Thanks again I will remember to do this. :D
