I am just wanting to know if I am working this in the right way.

22/q-4 - 7/q-4

my work: 22/q-4 - 7/q-4 = 15/q-4

22-7 = 15

Yep. As long as you have a common denominator, you can perform the normal addition/subtration operations in the numerator.
