I have no idea what "roots" mean. Unless it's talking about the 2nth partial "root?"

I think you've interpreted it and solved it correctly (in two different ways!), but the problem itself is stated very poorly:

I think it's meant to be something like

If $a_n=\sqrt{3\sqrt{5\sqrt{3\sqrt{5\dots}}}}$, where the expression for $a_n$ contains exactly $2n$ radical symbols, ...​

In other words, at each term, two more nested radicals are put around the previous term.

The English grammar is wrong, and the wording is non-mathematical.
