I surmise that it's likely you'd guessed in the same way as do most folk who guess correctly (like I think I did): A subconscious filtering of encoded patterns retrieved by the brain. It's a similar process to being able to read certain sentences despite several missing letters, or to view both sides of an optical illusion nearly simultaneously.
