Hi all,

I am hoping for some help with a question my daughter has and unfortunately I am not familiar with this type of math at all. She has the answer but needs to go through the steps of explaining how she found the answer.

To be honest I am hoping to learn a thing or two while helping her at the same time :)

The question is: 5- (C+3) = 4 + C

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

5- (C+3) = 4 + C

Using distributive property,

5 - C - 3 = 4 + C

Isolate 'C' ? add "C" to both sides

5 - C - 3 + C = 4 + C + C

5 - 3 = 4 + 2C

To further isolate 'C' subtract '4' from both sides

5 -3 - 4 = 4 + 2C - 4

5 - 7 = 2C

-2 = 2C

To further isolate 'C' divide by '2' - both sides

2C/2 = -2/2

C = -1
