These problems are there to give the children headache - why are you trying to share their pain?
Let them try it out - there are only so many possibilities - and with educated elimination, your child should get the answer without headache.
It will not be good for the student, if you do the problem instead....

You follow that rather than go from left to right. So here, you divide first. 24/8 is 3 and then you do 7+2+3=12.
